Culture has 4 characteristics. The first one is culture passed from generation to generation by the process of inculturation. It means that we get our culture from our ancestor and they teach it to their generation until us now. The second is Culture is shared. It means that the content of culture is shared to the entire community. The third is culture is symbolically expressed and transmitted. The most important symbolic system is language. With language people can passes the values information, experiences and history to new generation. The last is culture is adaptive. We can use our culture everywhere. Like in the US many people came from other culture but they still can use their own culture.

The ice berg as a culture means that we can’t see a lot of culture because it hidden in side it. Like the ice berg 90% is below the water so we can’t see it. So, we can split the ice berg into 2 parts. The first is above the water in culture part that people can see is dividing by 2 sections. The first is formal culture and the second is technical culture. Technical culture is a culture that we do it the rules is easily known and we know the reason to such as working. The formal culture is that we do it but the reason why we doing it is not clear such as folk dancing or ritual. The Part that below the water or we cannot see is called deep culture. People used to know it by imitating other people usually their parent or people that affect their life. The example is child rising, and friendship.

Salad bowl means that we see a bunch of people like a bowl salad. We can see the difference between them like the culture or the races like in the bowl of salad we can see many vegetable in it. Right now I live in USA where a lot of people came from different region of the world. So I can see that USA is a salad bowl. As example we can see in Chicago that a lot of Chinese people live in china town. Or in the north side there are a lot of Jewish. So people still want to live in their own culture.

Pop culture came from 2 different words Pop as popular and culture. If we separate the meaning of each word we know that Popular means that a lot of people know it. And culture mean behavior or believes that people have. So, Pop culture itself means that some behavior or believes that a lot of people knows about it. Pop culture made of 4 different items. There are objects, people events, and places. The objects mean that a lot of people doing that object like rap music if you hear radio everyday a lot radio playing rap music more often than any other music. The second is people as cultural icons. For example in America the winning of Barrack Obama as the first African American president makes African American in America get their rank more higher than before. The third one is Events. In pop culture the events are those large group of people participate in or can relate to. Such as the Oscar for all film makers really affect people in this year Oscar they had a surprise that the film that people think will win are lost and some of the still don’t believe it. The last one is places. It means that there are hold special meanings in that place. Like Hollywood for artist; a lot of artist live there and Hollywood always relates to artist live.

Some times pop culture is more difficult to understand than culture. As example if we read Macbeth or Hamlet play its really hard to understand it as a pop culture. But Shakespeare is like a box of movies which that people can understand it without learning it first.

We need to understand mainstream before study pop culture because the meaning or both term is almost the same. The meaning of mainstream it self is the Behavior that a lot of people do. So when we study pop culture that mean we study mainstream to.

Because when we read in humanities sometimes we don’t have to remember what some term means. What we need to think is what the effect is for the community. Like we read about the Oscar in red eye and then we discuss it what other people think about the Oscar and how people respond it.

Because red eye almost have everyday news or events that updated not like out text book it now covers everyday events. And in we can get information that they not include in the text book or other people comments about events. For example about the Oscar red eye think that some people in USA don’t care about the Oscar. Some people just watch it as an entertainment not as awards.

Johnny Depp, he always plays in Tim Burton movie. And his character usually like an insane people such as in Pirate of Caribbean he play as captain Jack sparrow

Avatar is another character that people has in three dimensional or two dimensional shapes that they usually have it in internet. We learn how to make avatar to know that we can make everything that we want in our avatar. Like me I want to make my avatar look more handsome than me and look skinnier not fat like me. Another example is the professor at law school in soul university has an female avatar in his online game.

People usually want to make themselves more powerful or better looking than their true identity. The writer trying to find someone who had a fat avatar but he couldn’t find anyone. And he generally describes that avatar are idealized version of themselves. And man usually changed his avatar gender to female. And it doesn’t have much reason it’s only because female character are treated better than male in Online games.

In virtual world we can have what ever character that we want, we can have a life that we want. Nick Yee says in his article that virtual world can trap us even more. It’s because we can have anything that we want in this world. Or it is the opposite side of your real life. For example that some looser in the real life can be a hero in their virtual world. And if that happened they can spend more and more time in virtual world than in the real life. And they can think the opposite. That virtual world is their real life and real life as virtual.

We learn to find information what kind of movies that people like or we can called it the mainstream of the community which is at that time the classrooms.

Genres mean kind or type that film has. One of the genres I learn is epic or history movies. Epic or historical movies usually have meaning to remember history of some places or country. They also have some historical background of some places

The Awards that goes to movies is the Oscar or the other name is the Academy awards. The Academy award this year is the 82^nd academy awards. The Academy is an organization made from some director, producer, artist and other cinematography. It’s only 3000 people inside the academy and they have to choose the nomination and the winner for the Oscar. In USA some people don’t care about the Oscar winners. Like when I am trying to interview people about their thinking in this year Oscar awards 3 out of 5 people didn’t watched it they just know the winner from News or newspaper. But for the movie industry and the artist it makes big impact. If their film won the Oscar and it’s not famous a lot of people usually want to see the films or sometimes buy the DVD if the film is not in theater anymore. It makes them produced more money. This years Oscar has made a new history. Kathryn Bigelow became the first women who won the Oscar for best director.

Film can make money because many reasons. There are the director are famous, the artist who play the movie are good, or they promotion for the movie is good. But it can fail because of 1 reason. That is the promotion. Even thought the director or the artists who play for the movie are good but if they have the wrong promotion the movie will fail. Like if the movie genres is drama but the trailer of the movie is comedy that may make the expectation for that movie is bad. Or they didn’t have good promotion like avatar movie they have everything for the movie like novel or merchandises

Indies movies mean the movie made by the big movie industry. Indies usually made by not really famous artist and producer. They made it just with low budget, movie can we called it Indies if their income is less than 50% of the big movie industry. But sometimes the Indies movie can win the Academy Awards and their movie can became popular.

Taylor Parry is an African American big time movie star and also a phenomenon. His film is a box office more than George Clooney and Cate Blanchett movies combined. According to his distributor 90% of the audience of his movie was African American and the cast is African American too. His movie was success not because the plot or the story line of the movie. It’s because his depict black American as people relating to other people. Black character in Hollywood bestows their moral wisdom on one another. From the PBS website we can learn that all the race all the same. And Parry uses his movie to make example of the PBS website.

Seeing the big picture means that we will learn a lot of things from big pictures which is mean movies from the silent movies to the newest technology sci-fi movie. This chapter gave us a big summarize what are we going to learn in side the chapter. And tell us movie has important role to show us another people lives. The world of film reflect who we are and see our successes and our failures. .

Technology has important role in everybody’s life. Usually for student it can help them to make their project easier. Even thought, for some people technology is hard but if they already understand about it, it will really help them. As example the glogster is one of the way to make a poster it just take like 10 minutes or more to make it and search the data in the internet. But if we want to make a real poster it can cost more than 1 hour to search all the data an make them together.

Music is one of the main pop culture thing. Because in these day everybody has an ipod to hear music. You can always see in the train or every where people usually has headset in their ear. In this unit we learn about genres of music. how to analyze music in different aspect and how to respond to different music.

and the last thing is about the technology the web 2.0 it also help us in these modern day. because maybe in the future every thing can be all doing by computer so we have to know all the use of the website
